Colposcopy & LEEP: Expert Care for Abnormal Pap Results
If your recent cervical screening or Pap smear has shown abnormal results, Dr. Sam Azer and the team at The Links Clinic in Edmonton are here to provide expert, compassionate care. To thoroughly evaluate these changes, we may recommend a colposcopy—a simple, in-office examination that uses a specialized magnifying instrument to closely inspect the cervix and identify any areas of concern. If precancerous or abnormal cells are detected, we can often treat them using a Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP). This quick, highly effective treatment safely removes the affected tissue, helping to prevent cervical cancer and protecting your long-term pelvic health. Our priority is to ensure you feel comfortable, fully informed, and supported throughout every step of your evaluation and treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions: Colposcopy & LEEP
Will a colposcopy or LEEP hurt? A colposcopy feels very similar to a routine Pap smear and is typically painless, though you may feel slight pressure from the speculum. If a LEEP or biopsy is necessary, we apply a local anesthetic to numb your cervix beforehand. You might experience some mild cramping, similar to menstrual cramps, during and shortly after the procedure.
How long does the procedure take? The colposcopy examination itself only takes about 10 to 15 minutes. If a LEEP is performed, the treatment takes just a few minutes longer. However, we recommend planning to be at The Links Clinic for about 45 minutes to an hour to allow time for checking in, preparing, and resting briefly afterward.
Do I need to do anything to prepare for my appointment? To ensure the clearest view of your cervix, we ask that you avoid sexual intercourse, using tampons, and inserting vaginal creams or medications for 24 to 48 hours before your appointment. We also recommend taking an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as ibuprofen, about an hour before your visit to help minimize any potential cramping.
What can I expect during recovery? After a colposcopy, you can generally return to your normal daily activities immediately. If you had a LEEP or biopsy, it is completely normal to experience mild cramping and a dark, coffee-ground-like discharge for a few days as the area heals. To protect your cervix while it recovers, you will need to avoid using tampons, swimming, taking baths, and sexual intercourse for about three to four weeks.
When will I get my results? Any tissue samples collected during your procedure are sent to a laboratory for careful analysis. Results typically take a few weeks. Our team will contact you as soon as the pathology report is ready, and we will schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss your results and the next steps in your care plan.
